 ## [Core Description Report](/core-description-report-0)

 Definition

A marine sediment concept defining how particles accumulate, are reworked, and change after burial on the seafloor. It governs depositional processes, physical properties, and post-depositional reactions measured through cores and laboratory analyses. It does not uniquely identify sources or processes without supporting stratigraphic, mineralogical, and geochemical evidence. It materially affects habitat, slope stability, and climate records by controlling the properties and composition of seabed deposits. The concept is generally stable, though analytical resolution and property measurement methods improve over time.

## Principle

Principle

Synthesize observational data and procedures into a coherent interpretive narrative that documents how descriptions were made, why interpretations follow from the observations, and where uncertainty remains.

## Demonstration

Demonstration

A 40-page report for a coring cruise that includes methodology for core handling and logging, per-core lithology logs with labeled facies, interpretation of depositional environments, cross-sections correlating horizons between cores, a table of metadata and links to raw images, and a section on confidence and potential biases.

## Misapplication

Misapplication

Mixing raw observations and speculative regional interpretation without separating evidence from interpretation or failing to document sampling and processing that could affect reproducibility.

## Consequence

Consequence

Provides a single authoritative deliverable that communicates results to stakeholders, supports peer review, guides subsequent sampling or modeling, and acts as a reference for management decisions.

## Reversal

Reversal

A dataset of logs and metadata supplied without integrative narrative, leaving users to infer methods and interpretations and increasing the risk of inconsistent reuse.

## Boundary

Boundary

Covers narrative interpretation and summary products derived from core descriptions; it may incorporate or reference metadata records and map products but is distinct from the raw data files and from formal peer-reviewed publication unless explicitly so designated.

## Semantic Tension

Semantic Tension

Adjacent to 'metadata record' and 'map product'—the report emphasizes explanation and interpretation, whereas metadata records emphasize discoverability and map products emphasize spatialization.

## Synthesis

Synthesis

A Core Description Report compiles metadata, observations, interpretation, figures and uncertainty statements into a documented narrative that explains how core-derived conclusions were reached and how confident those conclusions are.
